The Great Gatsby
You know those books you were suppose to read in high school, the summer reading assignment before class even began for your AP classes. I think this was one of them. I have not read this book, but I am looking forward to the movie. It saddens me that the only books I read in high school were Harry Potter books, and it saddens me even more that I no longer love the author or the franchise. I did not even watch the last movie of the series. I digress.
During church last weekend, our pastor spoke about a certain scene in the movie where Gatsby is showing Daisy all his fancy shirts that he has and he is throwing them onto the floor of his multi-million dollar estate. And in that moment Daisy starts to cry into one of these shirts. And these shirts are nice, but they are just a shirt. Why is she crying? Apparently this is a poignant question and the reason she cries is not for the sake of the shirts, but for what this moment represents. Gatsby has been working to become a dignified and worthy man for Daisy for the last 8 years to win her over. Every sweat he toiled, hour he worked, and girl he did not waste his time with was for her. He was planning for this moment. Can you imagine being loved so dearly that another person has devoted themselves to becoming the person you always wanted and providing for you in every way you needed. The sermon goes on to say that God loves us this much. And that is pretty awesome.
I never read the book or watched the original movie, so I apologize if some of the details are wrong, but I think many men have done great things in the name of love. And this works for me. I really love this story. So you be my Daisy alright? You can marry another even, but like this story I will win you back.
8 years.

Dude you need to read the whole book lol. It's not a happy ending.
[SPOILER ALERT]:
Yes, she did marry an abusive SOB and later came back to Gatsby. But then she was driving drunk with him and killed her hubby's mistress, and he took the blame. She jumps ship, runs back to abusive SOB, and he gets to be killed by the husband of the woman that Daisy ran over. You sure you want a Daisy, someone so vapid, shallow, and selfish that she lets the man head-over-heels for her take the blame and eventually dies for her mistake?
@hilabpartnerxD - WTF! I am not going to read that spoiler!!!! I am gonna watch the movie and enjoy it!
@Manbeast - LOL jus sayin', I'm sure you don't want a Daisy. Maybe you'd want a Hermione, but def not a Daisy.
I've always wanted to read this book. Now seems about right. Can I borrow debit?
I took AP english and never had to read this, but I did finish it last week. I don't think you want to be Gatsby, especially in the end.
It's a great book! Try to read it before seeing the movie. I remember in high school we dissected every inch of the book. It was really interesting though.
@wallflower_12 - stop giving me hints! why do i think this guy is gonna die!
GO AWAY!
@hilabpartnerxD - Hahaha I was JUST going to comment the same. But you beat me to it
Hahaha
Yea.. I feel for Gatsby...
Yeah, stories where the main character has the whole world in his hands usually don't end well. Lol
@coolmonkey - @youngvan - you guys are all jerks! :( Now i am gonna watch the movie with fear
The Great Gatsby is possibly my all-time favorite book, not for the story itself, but because the way it's written is absolutely sublime. Perfect brevity, perfect imagery.
read the book. wasn't all that; i didn't like the characters. didn't like the author much either; no surprise there.
i didn't like the book, but it is "considered" a classic. out of context, that is quite a meaningful scene. however, the character gatsby himself was a little looney. devoted is an understatement, he was utterly obsessed with her and fixated on getting into contact with her in the most convoluted ways. he worked shady jobs in order to get the money to appear as rich and successful as he wants to seem to Daisy. i see the point of the sermon, but don't be disillusioned about praising gatsby, lol...
@happyobligations - DAMNET!!! gatsby is not a cool guy?
Dangit!
Sorry to disagree with the general consensus but I love that book so much and I feel so much for Gatsby. It's one of my favorite books ever since high school. Cannot wait for the movie!!!
Yup this was assigned reading for 9th grade AP English. I read a couple chapters and then I spark note the rest =X But I still liked it! We had some pretty good discussions in class.
Such a great book but so tragic, and I swoon over the idea of seeing Dicaprio as Gatsby in the movie.
@pickwick12 - took the words right out of my mouth. I like everything about the book besides the plot and character development.
It is a great book, but, as people mentioned above, you will hate the ending!
who you trynna win?? she needs to recognize YOU bruh! hehe
I love this post.
